VPN for MacOS

Rutgers offers several methods of establishing Remote Access VPN connectivity on devices running Mac OSX. Documentation and software downloads for each are located on this page.

AnyConnect Client

The preferred method of connecting to VPN on a Mac is using the Cisco AnyConnect Client. Installing the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client eliminates the need to download the application each time a user logs into the SSL VPN Portal.

If you have not previously installed the Cisco AnyConnect client, you can authenticate through a web browser which will attempt to auto-install AnyConnect. If this fails, you will then be presented the option to manually download and install the client. Please note that administrative privileges are required to install AnyConnect.

Steps to Download the AnyConnect VPN

  1. Go to the AnyConnect dashboard by logging in with your NetID and NetID Password

         The Cisxo AnyConnect Dashboard

  2. Select Start AnyConnect

  3. Select Download for macOS.

  4. In the Downloads folder, locate and run the AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client installation package

Native macOS VPN Client

With the implementation two-factor authentication enhanced security, using mac OS’ native Cisco IPSec VPN client will no longer be supported as of July 1, 2019. We strongly recommend moving over to the Cisco AnyConnect client as soon as possible.
