VPN for Linux


Rutgers offers several methods of establishing Remote Access VPN connectivity on devices running various Linux distributions. The methods described on this page have been tested with Red Hat and Ubuntu. Documentation and software downloads for each are located on this page.

AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client for Linux

AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client is the official Cisco VPN Client. If you have not previously installed the Cisco AnyConnect client, you can authenticate to any of the VPN’s through a web-browser which will attempt to auto-install AnyConnect. If this fails, you will be given the option to download and install the client manually.

OpenConnect Open Source Client

A VPN connection can also be established using Open Connect Open Source Client. Both openconnect and networkmanager-openconnect packages are available in the repositories for most Linux operating systems.

Installation

Install the OpenConnect package from your distribution’s repositories.

Usage

OpenConnect can be used with NetworkManager, or manually via the command line.

NetworkManager (Optional, but recommended)

Install the network-manger-openconnect package. After installation, restart your computer. Then configure and connect with your desktop environment’s network settings. You will want to use vpn.rutgers.edu for the gateway. Save and connect. It will prompt you for a password twice. For the first prompt, enter your NetID password. For the second prompt enter one of the following four DUO actions.

  1. Enter a 6 digit duo passcode
  2. Type "push" to send a push
  3. Type "phone" to call your device
  4. Type "sms" to text new passcodes

Command Line

Run the following command: openconnect vpn.rutgers.edu It will prompt you for a password twice. For the first prompt, enter your NetID password. For the second prompt enter one of the following four Duo actions.
