Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Gateway access for Windows


Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Gateway provides RDP access to on-campus Windows desktops from external networks without requiring a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Once connected, you will have access to everything your computer has installed or is permitted to access on the network. Contact your local IT group to configure your PC to allow Remote Desktop connections.

Locating Machine Name and IP Address of Remote Desktop

Collecting the Machine Name of your Remote Desktop

  1. Click on Start.

  4. Click on About, on the bottom left.

  5. Record the Device Name

Collecting the Machine IP Address of your Remote Desktop

  1. Click on Start.

  2. Click on Settings.

  3. Click on Network & Internet.

  4. Click on Ethernet (Wired) or Wi-Fi (Wireless).

  5. Click on the listed Connection.

  6. Scroll down to Properties and Record the IPv4 Address.

Setting up the Remote Desktop Connection (Windows)

  1. Open the Remote Desktop Connection App on your machine.
    • Click on Start and type “mstsc”, or “Remote Desktop” and click on the Remote Desktop Connection App.
    • Alternatively launch “run” and enter: %windir%\system32\mstsc.exe

  2. The Remote Desktop Connection App will launch.

  3. Click on Show Options.

  4. On the General Settings Tab:
    1. Enter your Computer Name or IP Address in the Computer Field. If you do not have this information refer to the above instructions or contact your local IT Team.
    2. Enter rad\NetID into the User name field.
      • Replace NetID with your personal NetID. 
      • Ensure you use a backslash in rad\NetID and not a forward slash.
      • If your remote machine is not on RAD and has other Credentials use those here. The format would be: DOMAIN\USERNAME

  5. Click on the Advanced Tab.

  6. In the Connect from Anywhere section click on Settings…

  7. Select Use these RD Gateway server settings.
    1. Enter rdgateway.rutgers.edu in the Server Name field.
    2. Uncheck Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses.
    3. Click OK.

  8. Click on Connect at the bottom.

  9. The RD Gateway Server Credentials Popup will prompt you for a Username and password.
    • Enter rad\NetID then your NetID Password and click OK.
      • Replace NetID with your personal NetID. 
      • Ensure you use a backslash in rad\NetID and not a forward slash.
      • Do this even if your local machine does not use RAD.

  10. When connecting you will receive a DUO Prompt on your configured device. Approve the Duo authentication request. You have 60 seconds to approve the DUO Login Request, or the session will timeout. If that happens simply go back to step 8.

  11. Next you will then be prompted for the local machine credentials, enter the password for the computer you are connecting to. The username was entered in step 4.

  12. A security certificate warning will appear. Click Yes to approve. You can check the Don’t ask me again for connection to this computer option to avoid this prompt on future connections.

  13. The Remote Session will now begin.

  14. At the top of the screen there will be a small remote desktop control bar.
    • The Thumbtack will pin the control bar. If the bar disappears simply move the cursor to the top of center of the screen and it will appear.
    • You can end your session by clicking the X or by going to Start Power > Disconnect.
